The project involved an owner with a background in engineering and construction that wanted design alternatives explored for an addition to a house on Lake Springfield. The existing house was a small sweet simple Cape Cod-like structure typical of many constructed around the lake in approximately the 1940’s. Like many houses on Lake Springfield it simply was a house that could have existed anywhere and had no particular relationship to the lake.
The program created a master suite on the first level and a new informal living space connected to a dining area and kitchen. The new living space took into consideration the views to and from the lake with large amounts of glass allowing for the views and natural light.
Conceptually the house was to take on more vibrant characteristics such as its color scheme, “fat” columns, large round clerestory windows, a stair tower connecting levels, and a dynamic kitchen area. These features enhance the setting and connect the owners and their house with the lake which was the primary reason to select the location.
